Mangoes are often referred to as the ‘King of the Fruits’, and it’s not hard to see why. With their sweet taste, incomparable flavor, and health properties, they bring a slice of sunshine to plates across the world. These benefits haven’t gone unnoticed by consumers; worldwide mango production passed the unbelievable 56 million tonnes mark. In fact, they are the most eaten fruit in the world.

Now, mangoes can be found across the world, cultivated in most frost-free, tropical, and warmer subtropical climates. Mangoes feel particularly at home in India, which accounts for 65% of worldwide production. There’s no problem choosing a variety you like either, as there are about 1500 varieties of mango grown there, with the leading varieties including Totapuri, Alphonso, and Kesar.

It is the leading fruit crop of India and considered to be the king of fruits. Besides the delicious taste, excellent flavor, and attractive fragrance, it is rich in vitamin A&C. The tree is hardy in nature and requires comparatively low maintenance costs. Mango occupies 22% of the total under fruits comprising 17.73 million hectares, with a total production of 20.44 million tonnes. Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh are having the largest area under mango each with around 25% of the total area followed by Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

Mango can be grown under both tropical and sub-tropical climates from sea level to 1400 m altitude, provided there is no high humidity, rain, or frost during the flowering period. Places with good rainfall and dry summer are ideal for mango cultivation. It is better to avoid areas with winds and cyclones which may cause flower and fruit shedding and breaking of branches. Mango can grow in various types of soil; however, soils with poor draining properties should be avoided. Also, the mango tree does not grow well in soils with high pH levels, more than 7.8 is the upper limit. Alluvial soil with a mix of organic matter and pH levels between 6.5 to 7.5 is ideal for mango trees. Though it is a tropical fruit, the tree grows well in sub-tropical conditions. Rain or frost during the time of flowering can be harmful; the temperature for the growth of mango is 22 – 27°C.
