Watermelon is now widespread in all tropical and subtropical regions of the world and is mostly grown for fresh consumption of the juicy and sweet flesh of mature fruit. It is one of the most popularly grown fruit vegetables in the country today during summer. Watermelon is an important fruit crop. It is a newly introduced cash crop gaining a high level of economic importance in the generation of income and provision of nutritional value. Watermelon flesh contains high quantity of vitamins, minerals and other antioxidant compounds which play important role in human metabolism. Antioxidant components help in preventing human disease by acting as oxygen radical scavenger. Watermelon rind and seed also have many health benefits due to the presence of important amino acids citrulline, fibres, minerals and phenolic compounds.

Watermelon grows well in deep fertile and well-drained soil. It gives best result when grown on sandy or sandy loam soil. Soil having poor drainage capacity is not suited for watermelon cultivation. Follow crop rotation as continuous growing of same crop on same field leads loss of nutrients, poor yield and more disease attack. pH of soil should be in between 6-7. Plough land and bring to fine tilth. In North India, sowing is done February – March month. In North east and west India sowing is done during November to January. Watermelon can be direct seeded or transplant in nursery and then transplanted to main field. Watermelon not only tolerates hot weather but for best growth requires more heat than any other vegetables. Watermelon seeds germinate well and plants thrive at 25°C – 30°C. Fruits mature best at 30°C. Watermelon requires dry weather and plenty of sunshine. Continuous rain or cloudy will not only stunt the plant growth but also reduce the flowering and fruit setting. If watermelons mature in rainy season, the sugar content will be greatly reduced.
