Who in this day and age doesn’t own a mobile phone or hasn’t heard of digital media platforms like facebook, whatsapp, instagram, radios, e-books and apps; granted there might be a select few but digital media is now a ubiquitous phenomenon, all 3 generations in your household are likely to be using these platforms. Which brings us to the predicament- if the use of such platforms is so widespread then why not leverage this network to connect with people situated in the remotest of regions of the world?

Before we talk about the world, let us get an idea of the situation in India. With over 220million users, India is now world’s second-biggest smartphone market and it goes to show how easy it is to connect with people. Given the fact that about 50% of the population is constituted by farmers (600 million), it is safe to say that many of them would belong in the 220 million smart-phone-using strata and it is highly likely that they are on Facebook, Whatsapp or other social media platforms or use radios as their source of information. But even if we leave the statistics alone, the general trend as seen and observed over the last decade clearly points towards digital media gaining traction over print media and a huge influx of information being shared through these digital platforms.

India isn’t the only developing nation that relies heavily on the agricultural sector, places such as Jordan, Ukraine, Turkey and Africa also represent huge potential which has hitherto been untapped. But with internet penetration- easy communication and networking-will become facile. Creating an online network of a farming community where information about innovative agri-solutions, products, challenges faced within agricultural sector, etc are dispensed wouldn’t only be for farmers’ welfare but also HPM, as they will be one step closer to achieving their vision of being a leader in the agro-chemicals industry that has revolutionized the same.

Within the realm of digital media, social media is the most common digital platform after websites and with more information being traversed across borders, farmers will be better equipped to keep up with modern agricultural technology thereby ameliorating the economic situation of the country and attracting investors across multiple sectors.
